Wishing upon a star that people are better than they are is a terrible solution every time. Instead, what works is a structurally systematized solution, which is exactly what self-driving cars are.

Odd use of tense here. The video speaks negatively about “wishing” for better driving, then gushes over autonomous driving like it’s already the answer.

Forcibly fixing poor driving comes down to focusing on drivers or on technology. Governments can:

Enhance driver abilities through stricter training, and incentivize good driving by making it harder to get a license and easier to lose it.

Give up on humans altogether and double down on automating everything.

Now to be fair, either one of these can solve our traffic problems if we invest in it. We’ll have to wait a while for option 2 to become viable. But as for option 1? That’s something that could be implemented a lot sooner...

I think he’s saying that we need to invest in autonomous solutions, which we’re already doing. I don’t think we’re giving up on humans, we’re just becoming obsolete as the best driving “machine”.

Technically, we’ve been working this way since the invention of ABS, then traction control, then lane departure warnings, and now auto braking.

Yeah, all that stuff has definitely been leading towards autonomy. But these features haven’t done anything to make people better at driving.

I dunno, removing every last aspect of human control from driving sounds a lot like giving up to me.

Yes, I too believe that banning all drivers is a great idea, because I’m worried about traffic in rural North Carolina. This is great in New York City, but being puttered along a backroad at 25mph with no control over my speed is a waste of time in non-urban America.
